- Handpicked and co-fermented with 7% Grenache for complexity, winemaker Phil Lehmann finished the 2015 Mezzo Shiraz in a mixture of 2nd and 3rd use French oak for 6 months before bottling. Rested for a further 12 months before release, it exhibits a beautiful deep purple colour and a stunning perfume. On the palate soft fruit, juicy blackberries and dark chocolate meet with a touch of game meats and pepper. In the mid 1980's Robert Hesketh and Mark Swann planted the first vines on the terra rossa over limestone soils in the Tatiara agricultural district in South Australia. Despite its remote location half (Mezzo) way between Adelaide and Melbourne, the soil profile, availability of artesian water and warm dry climate made it the ideal place for the production of premium quality fruit.
The 2015 vintage marks the second year the Hesketh family, with winemaker Phil Lehmann, have made a regionally branded wine from the Old Mundulla vineyard.
Use of the Italian term Mezzo represents not only the location, but is also a nod to the heritage of those who built and managed the original vineyard.
Winemaking : Our MEZZO Shiraz was picked during the last days of February after a long and slow 2015 ripening period. The Shiraz fruit was open-topped, cool fermented to enhance aromatics and maintain purity. Phil chose to co-ferment a small portion of Grenache (7%) in with the Shiraz for added complexity, before the juice was racked into second and third fill French oak hogsheads for six months maturation.
Colour: An inky and dense purple with light violet rim.
Aroma: An aromatic nose full of rich dark cherries, hints of raspberry and a smooth slick of vanilla oak. A red liquorice sweetness is also noticeable.
Palate: A bold, straight-up Shiraz. The initial hit of flavour is full of ripe and juicy blackberries, but as the palate levels out you become aware of dark chocolate, a whiff of white pepper and toasted coffee. A gamey meatiness lurks in the background. A complex and intriguing Shiraz which delivers excellent length until the very last sip.
Food Match: A serious steak to accompany a serious Shiraz. Think dry-aged rib eye with smashed new potatoes and butter greens.
Cellaring: 5 – 8 years.

Bright, deep purple hue and a fresh, spicy aroma, with pepper notes and a certain raw nakedness. Immature but good. Intense flavour, lively and bold, bright, very intense and high-quality, but just a bit young and shrill for my preference. Many others will enjoy it, as it is soft and already approachable.

It's incredible vibrant and youthful in its bright purple colouring, then splashes fabulous blueberry and black fruits with mint-dark chocolate through its spine. Decadently rich, mouth pleasing and sophisticated for this price tag.94
