De Bortoli Regional Reserve Yarra Valley Chardonnay
2012 De Bortoli Regional Reserve Yarra Valley Chardonnay
This Chardonnay first popped up in one of our Cracka Panel tastings. We were immediately suspicious ('what is this wine?'), then excited ('ooh reserve it should be a belter') and finally pumped ('wow this is delicious').
It's a rollercoaster ride tasting at Cracka.
Needless to say that after our tasting we immediately took all the cases of this De Bortoli Regional Reserve Yarra Chardonnay that the good people at De Bortoli would give us (Hi De Bortoli!) and we don't regret it for one moment.
The key to this wine's appeal is that it combines richness and texture with proper acidity, the flavours in the white peach department with an edge of citrus and creamy lees/oak flavours.
Crafted from De Bortoli's Dixons Creek vineyard, and out of a seriously great vintage in the Yarra Valley, this is proper Yarra Chardonnay. 100
2012 was a very good growing season, similar to 2006. It showed cool conditions, good fruit maturity, high natural acidity and a relaxed period during picking. The wines have an abundance of flavour quite early and will also mature well.
Appearance: Medium straw colour with green edges
Bouquet: Elegant lively florals, white flowers and nuance of nougat
Palate: Brioche-like fruit with hazelnut and white peach. Soft creamy flavours with balanced acidity and texture
Suggested cuisine: Fried or grilled whiting fillets
Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar up to five years
Cracka Tasting Panel says:“
Wonderfully balanced Chardonnay. The light oak influence balances well with some zesty fresh melon fruit, with some lees influence along the way, that is well restrained. You cant ask for more in a sub $25 Chardonnay. Over-delivers exactly what Chardonnay drinkers demand. A stonker!!
Best Drinking: now till 202094
